What we need to do is send our guys to the countries with alot top notch coaches and greco wrestlers so we can compete against and train with the toughest gr wrestlers in the world. Then after they see and understand the sport better bring those guys back here with a good greco coach to teach some of our other guys. You have to compete against the best alot to get to that level of bringing home medals. I hope freestyle does alot better, although I wouldn't be surprised if do poorly there also. I want the US to do well, don't get me wrong, but we seem to be lacking in medals in the past few Olympics.

I agree 100%, but that would take $ and there is no $ in wrestling! Very sad day for USA wrestling!

Maybe we should get some more foreign coaches to teach Greco at the OTC and other places or are they already doing that. I would think maybe a change in the coaching at some level could be in the cards at the OTC.
Anyone else agree?

I think that the Greco team has had some foreign coaches over the years, Ivanov comes to mind. I'm not sure that just importing foreign coaches is the answer. I think it's more of a systematic approach that other countries seem to be taking more than the US. I think money plays a factor, and it seems like programs such as the World Class Army program and the 250K incentive are a step in the right direction. Wrestlers focusing primarily on folkstyle until the age of 18 (college age) also plays a role. European wrestlers are wrestling freestyle/greco from an early age, although not wrestling competitive until later than the US (maybe 13-14).

I also think we are starting to see some of the younger products of the current Greco system start to develop. Provisor and Coleman are great examples of young talent in our Greco program. Both fell short, but wrestling on this stage at a young age will be huge for them as they continue their international careers. Both will be future World and Olympic medalists.

Much like US Soccer fans are seeing with the National Team's inability to step up and become a top 5-10 nation, many of these initiatives take some time and perhaps even over the course of 2-3 Olympic cycles. Although I think there will be some serious discussions about the future of USA Wrestling in Greco. We can only hope for some better results in Freestyle.

The US will always have some athletes that perform well internationally but that's it. Not that its a bad thing but there is too much freedom and choice here for our best athletes to devote themselves to international style wrestling. Our culture ensures that most of them pursue more glamorous/better paying options.
Just here in Illinois every year we see our top wrestlers that have a shot at collegiate/pro football careers put wrestling in the rear view.

Inner city Americans take to basketball and football because it is a means to a better life for themselves and their families. The same is true for the countries that dominated us in wrestling. Wrestling (especially the international styles) doesn't mean enough to most of us, all of America not just a relative small number of us that appreciate wrestling. Look at the coverage wrestling has had on tv so far; less than handball, field hockey, water polo, beach volleyball, archery, air gun shooting, badminton, ping pong, synchronized diving....

Clearly, the Olympics so far have been disappointing for our wrestlers. For whatever reason, the results have not been as positive as many of us had hoped. For greco, our country has had some good success in the past couple of Olympic cycles on the world level. I do not think it is a coaching problem, I think it is more of an execution problem from the wrestlers. Regardless of coaching, the athletes need to go out and perform, and even some of them have said they just did not go out and perform the way they normally do. The rules are the same for every one, and we have known these rules for a while now, so I cannot blame it on that either. Clearly, if we were out conditioning people like crazy, I would say a match of 2-3:00 periods would benefit us. But, from results, and matches, this is not the case anymore. Other countries out-execute us, and it is something to learn from for 2016.
