I can go either way on the increase in points. I think the near fall would encourage more mat wrestling.
With the take down points, it would reward a wrestler who is able to dominate on the feet. I would like to see the rationale for all of these proposals. My guess is they are thinking that increasing points will help to speed up matches and make them more exciting. If you are down by 7 late in a match, with these changes, you could turn that around pretty quickly. |

And Mack, at least we can agree on how ridiculous the idea of mat-side weigh-ins is.

I say team scoring is what should be reviewed. For example a 1 point O.T. win scores the same 3 team points as a 7-0 win.

103 112 119 125 130 135 140 145 152 160 170 182 195 220 hwt. 15 weight classss no more criteria

It is kind of odd they took the smallest weight from 103 to 106. At our IESA regional there were 6, 8th graders that qualified for state at 90 lbs, and below. They will be pretty undersized in the lightest weight in high school.

Well obesity is one of our countries biggest problems so it only makes sense to promote that by adding heavyweights and taking away from lightweights ...

I used to think the same way, that 15 weights would get rid of criteria, but they don't entirely. In most cases they do, but you forget the double-forfeit scenario, with seven wins each otherwise. The likelihood of this happening in big meets is low, but for some smaller schools it could be an issue.

I totally agree with you coach. When I wrestled in high school 20 plus years ago we had 98 lbs to start off with. I wrestled that the first 2 years and then 103. My 8th grade son wrestled at 90 - 95 lbs all year long. If he gain weight like he did last year he should be in between 106 to 113 lbs. Personally I would like to see it go back to the way it was with 15 classes and leave it there.

I don't like any of the changes in scoring and I am indifferent on the rest time/number of matches per day rules.
What I would like to see, to get rid of the inconsistency/subjectivity of the stalling call, is elimination of stalling and the addition of a 1 point push-out as is used in Freestyle/Greco. This keeps a guy from backing to edge and makes him work-in which would allow the offensive wrestler all of the opportunity he needs to score. I think the worst form of stalling is the defensive wrestler backing to the edge and being able to bail out when in trouble. In my opinion there should be no stalling on the mat because it should be the responsibility of the bottom wrestler to find away out no matter what the top man is doing and the responsibility of the top man to find away to turn the bottom man no matter what he is doing and if he can't cut him and either get a takedown or drive him out of bounds to score. I would even go so far as to award a 2nd point for the 4th push-out and above. |
