Well put!

I believe Cael returned to ISU to learn to coach. He proved that he can coach and that he can recruit. But as you said Danny the burden of winning at ISU may of been a bit much. Especially with the in state rival, Iowa doing so well.

Have you ever noticed how any time the Cubs manager job opens up there is never a shortage of applicants despite the 100 plus losing years. That is because they all want to be the one to lead the Cubs to the title. The manager would receive Pope type status in Illinois. Look at how much Mike Ditka is loved because of the '85 Bears. Maybe Cael sought that type of dream instead of adding on to the ISU legacy.

As far as money goes, never under estimate it's power. That was a lot of money to turn down which is why Cael did not. Mormon or not money was a large factor in Cael's decision. He may not admit it in public but you can believe he had a long talk with his wife and once he told her the dollar figure it was a lot easier to convince her to pick up her family and move.

In our generation coaches change teams. There is not a lot of coaches that stay in one place for 3 decades for less money than their rivals. Even fewer turn down a chance to move for more money and climb the impossible mountain.

As a wrestling fan I plan to just sit back and watch. It should be real interesting.
Well put! Just curious, how much money did Penn State give Cael?

I heard in his press release that he is making "less than a 10% increase in salary".

But 10% of what? I would think he is making 10% more than his base salary, paid from the university. But then you have think about the signing bonus he probably received, as well as the money he is getting from outside sources who are helping to fund his move to Penn St.
If I heard correctly, he met with the AD plus 2 big time boosters before taking the job. I am guessing those boosters might have aided in the process of Cael moving on.

That's what I read too!!

With that said, it doesn't appear money was the motivating factor, which is consistent with Cael's press release. It sounds to me Cael feels he can recruit better wrestlers at Penn State vs. ISU. I also read there maybe some friction with the AD at ISU, which if thats the case, nobody wants to be in an unhappy work environment, especially a highly prolific coach/wrestler like Cael. He can "cherry pick" he's job opportunity, literally!!! I think he saw an opportunity it get an out of ISU, and took it!!! If you're going to leave ISU, PSU is the perfect oppportunity to accomplish he's goals! It's that simply! People change jobs all the time for better working environments !! Hopefully Cael finds happiness at PSU!!

And with all ofthis said just when will some college coach see Illinois as his (or her) plum job and sign on the dotted line? If Illinois is such a good job why has no coach signed on.

OK, I'll take the job!

Wait, you mean they have to offer it to someone in order for them to be able to accept it?

OK, that said, maybe they have not offered it to anyone yet.

Well the new hot rumor is Rob Koll is taking the Iowa State job. So ISU can lose a guy and find a guy while Illinois is still...doing whatever it is they are doing....why is that....heck...just hire Sean Bormet and cut to the chase....

I hope that what I have been hearing are correct about the Illinois job. They would be getting a great coach from the MAC conference.

It would make sense for Rob Koll to get out of cornell....Cael will be taking all the recruits from the east that Koll had been getting in recent years....University of Illinois should think Hawkeye when hiring a new coach simply hiring a old U of I wrestler wont get it done in the big ten anymore..

Why should anyone question what Cael's intentions or reasons are? It's his decision to make, and he made it. If Joe Torre wants to go and coach the Washington Nationals, let him do it. Maybe Penn State will be a bigger challenge than ISU.... Even better for him if he suceeds. He did it because he wanted to. Good luck Cael!
