Ramos Wins Showdown
BY SETH SCHWARTZSpecial to Illinois Matmen Two of the nation’s best took the mat in the 130 pound class Saturday at Glenbard North. Glenbard North’s Tony Ramos was in control as he came away with a convincing 3-0 decision over Sandburg’s Jon Morrison. Morrison, who moved up from 125, started out aggressively taking two low single shots in the first minute. Ramos used an arm-drag to get behind Morrison for two points with six seconds left in the first period. In the beginning of the middle frame, Morrison’s initial attempt to get out was thwarted when Ramos threw Morrison back down to the mat and the bout was delayed briefly for blood time. Morrison chose neutral in the third period, but Ramos stifled any attack. “I am getting stronger at hand-fighting,” said Ramos. “I was too tentative; I was holding back a little [when I had opportunities]. I’ve been working on going from move-to-move; that’s something I am going to need at the college level.” “I learned [at the Ironman] you need to stay up mentally for every match.” Sandburg coach Eric Siebert was impressed with Ramos. “When you choose down you need to get up and out,” said Siebert. “Ramos beat us up and Jon wasn’t the same guy after the second period. You have to give Tony credit. He wrestled hard, smart and had more horsepower than Jon.” Morrison assessed the match. “I had a chance to score, but I didn’t pull the trigger,” said Morrison. “I didn’t give myself enough chances to score and I didn’t do a good job on bottom. I have to go back and look at the film and see what adjustments I need to make. Tony was better today.” Glenbard North won the dual 35-21. Photo credit: Gary Larsen

Sounds like a rematch of Ramos-Morrison at the FS tourney last year at Maine South, Ramos won that too.
