Your underage son/daughter wants a drink in this private establishment and the owner wants to served them, well by all means it is his God given right to do so, who is society to say it is not
Very very good point! (I did chuckle a bit, but I know this post is not meant to be funny, just to prove a point)

No it's not a good point. Read the response to it. She's comparing smoking among adults to illegal activities. They would have to outlaw smoking altogether for this to be a good point.

All schools in all states have a code of conduct for their athletes that they must follow. There must be a reason for the rule if all schools follow it?

Why do all these schools have these rules to begin with? Maybe, it is to teach them that their actions have consequences and yes teenagers believe they are indestructible, that they won’t get caught etc…. which can lead to poor judgments, that can sadly affect the rest of their life.

Allowing them to get away with it when they are caught does them a great disservice.

Here is a great quote by Frank Outlaw.
“Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.”

It's a good lesson in responsibility and since they are kids, they get second and third chances.

You brought up the idea of teachers driving drunk. Guess what, they only get one chance. They get caught once and it's in the papers, the parents read about it then the kids find out, kids start telling other kids and eventually they all lose respect for the teacher. Why make them sign a contract? I'm sure there are instances of teachers losing their job over this, or if you do keep your job you go through the embarrassment of trying to explain why you need to carpool with someone who HAS a license, or facing a parent who knows about you being arrested. Again this is all after only ONE offense. Aren't we supposed to be leading these high schoolers into adulthood? If so they need to learn consequences for their actions...sometimes they learn the hard way.
There is not always a revoked liscense after one offense. And most teachers are in unions and what happens outside of school stays outside of school. Part of the point I did not make very well was that these same coaches and teachers are not so quick to point out their peers when they break laws and rules. The same ones they expect kids to follow.

It is against the law! That is why you are carded even if they think that your close to 18! Alot of schools have policies close to this, and as a student athlete I am all for it. My understanding is if your caught with tobacco or any illegal product,in or out of season, in or out of school, it are punished.

It is a good point - you just don't like her examples.

The simple fact that the indoor smoking ban becomes part of the ILCS on Jan. 1 and becomes just as illegal as anything on her list. It's done and over. There is nothing left to debate.

Your main point seems to be that you don't think there should be limits on behavior that is legal. Even when doing so promotes the general health and welfare.

We do this ALL the time.

(e.g. drinking - legal. drinking to excess and driving - illegal.)

You think so? I don't think there is any state law that bans possession or use by minors. There are statutes that ban the sale of tobacco products to those underage. There are also statutes that prohibit minors from using fake identification to purchase tobacco products.

Go ahead and check:

http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/ilcs.asp

However - some local ordinaces exist that supercede the IL statues.

Does not matter if he broke any laws or not. Lucas broke the Code of Conduct that has specific punishments for breaking. We are beating a dead horse. I think everyone wishes Lucas could be wrestling right now. This is a lesson in life. If you break the rules, you will be punished.
