Out of State tuition...how hard is to be considered "in state"

Out of State tuition - its been a long time, but I remember some kids doing some legal manuever like legal emancipation from parents or something, getting a job in the state, and being able to pay in state tuition - does anybody know how hard it is for students to "switch states" - also I know IA,MN,&WI had a deal where they all paid in-state between each other (maybe I will have to get a shack and call it a residence out in the middle of Iowa, I guess if you work for yourself maybe you could, I assume it would be legal?), does Illinois have any deals with other states?

I was looking at prices, I found it odd that Ohio State is half the price of Illinois...

Any other tips would be helpful, I don't think a wrestling scholarship will be in the cards...

When I moved to Florida, I lived and worked there for a year. Then I went to grad school at UF and was considered a resident. You're probably looking for a better solution, though.

I looked into it when my scholarship was running out and from what I remember in most states you had to show continuous residence for at least 1 year I think. If you owned a home I believe you could immediately apply for residence. You also have to register to vote in that state, register your car in that state, and switch your license to that state. Lastly your parents can't claim you as a dependent. I believe you also have to work in the state.

best bet is to find a school that has scholarships for out of state students with good academic records. It's what I had, and it had me pay a little less than in state tuition. Most of the schools in Michigan have em but they have academic requirements gpa wise, require you to be full time, and only last for 8 semesters. Unfortunately, I couldn't find many scholarships for in state students at Illinois schools so I looked out of Illinois.

Each university sets its own policy.

Yes, for once I agree with NIref (just kidding NIref). You have to check with each state and the coach will probably know.

In illinois all a kid had to do was get an illinois drivers license and have a bill with his name and address in Illlinois and they would give him residency in the second semester of his first year in school.

Arizona was insane. You had to show W-2s for a whole year of work, plus bills with an AZ address and in your name plus an AZ license and still they might hassle you.

How they enforce it is as important as what the law is. Ask someone in the state you are looking at and you will know.
