Do any other countries even do folkstyle like the USA? - Its seems like each country has their own version of folkstyle..., from what I've seen other countries folkstyle has a little more sumo element to it...

- I see this thread a degraded off the Olympic wrestling topic, I guess we need some wrestling to start - I did notice that the Official Olympics website didn't have wrestling listed in the grid calendar...but there is the usa wrestling link anyway...- in the meantime enjoy some judo...-I bet Brazil will come on strong into wrestling for their Hosting of the games...2016 right...they have most the UFC titles and dominate in other grappling styles...

Do other countries have a folkstyle like the US?, I doubt it...

The US is the only country that wrestles folkstyle --- I'm not even sure how to respond to your assertion that folkstyle somehow resembles sumo

I highly doubt that brazil will do very well in wrestling at the 2016 olympics regardless of where it is being hosted --- Brazil has never earned an olympic medal in wrestling --- ever.

Many if not most countries have folkstyle wrestling. Folkstyle means a local style. In Turkey it is oil wrestling. In Japan it is sumo. Mongolia, Ethiopia, and countries all around the world have their own folkstyles. They are not in the Olympics because they are only wrestled in one country or area of the world.

I didn't mean our USA folkstyle resembles sumo - I meant many other countries have a type of wrestling local to that country, I've seen a bunch, Icelandic, Turkish, Mongolian - I meant these other types are more like sumo...(there was a show with an NFL player that went to other countries to do sports like wrestling, also that show with 2 mma guys)

I remember last Olympics we had somebody craddle somebody - I don't think they were used to that...

True --- many countries do have some form of wrestling resembling folkstyle --- but none strictly following what we call folkstyle here in america. Most --- if not all --- other countries recognize the olympic styles as the primary form of wrestling. And yes --- single & double leg takedowns and cradles can be VERY effective scoring moves in freestyle wrestling.

Mentioning pot really started a lot of posts. Which made me remember the documentary "Smashing Machine" - you would like it. Its about a NCAA champ: Mark Kerr in his post college MMA career and I saw it a long time ago but I recall how casual they were about a whole lota drug usage.

Here's Fila's website.

http://www.fila-wrestling.com/

Along the top you can see some of the styles Fila recognizes.

Styles like Pankration, MMA, Grappling, Beach Wrestling and a group of styles they call "traditional" like Yakut, Kures, American Folkstyle and something called Koresh, that was obviously named after David Koresh.

ALL the best grapplers in Brazil do judo or jui-jitsu, period. At one time, MMA was dominated by Brazilian jui-jitsu fighters, mostly from or trained by the Gracie family. Brazil has done VERY well in Olympic judo as well, both men's and women's.
