Close, but...

Sorry, folks, but the FargoDome internet access is fading in and out.

Anyway, it would have been quite an upset for Justin Valencia to make it 4-for-4 in the finals at 160...after all, his opponent, Tyler Coates of Washington, came into the match having pinned all six previous opponents in the first period.

Coates, sixth in the state this year, made it 7-for-7 with a headlock. He wound up getting the OW.

Pennsylvania, with Brooks Black defending in the third-period clinch to win a three-period snoozefest over Florida's Doug Vollaro, the same wrestler he beat in both FILA Cadet National finals, to close out the finals at 285, held on to win the team title, 60-56. The Keystone Staters gave us a lot of help...they lost quite a few place matches...but in the end, they just had more bodies. Illinois did have the most champions...three.

Interesting that both Pennsylvania champions either will be (Coover) or already are (Black) going to school at Blair.

Jordan Rogers of Washington did Coates one better in winning the title at 171. He also pinned his way to the title, scoring eight falls to Coates' seven. Six came in the first period, including the final, one in the second and one in the third. A 2009 state champion, Rogers was unable to go for two this year due to an emergency appendectomy the week of the state tournament.

The rest of the Illinois placings:

160 - Mason Wright, 4th; Tony Cashmore, 5th; Cody Pych, 6th
171 - Sam Brooks, 7th
189 - Jimmy Prince, 6th
215 - A.J. Dobson, 3rd; Cole Whitford, 7th

Until next time...
