First Round Bye

What is your opinion on having the first round bye at state?

I think it is more of a disadvantage to have to wait all day and have the nervs pile up while your waiting for your chance to wrestle. Every year some of the top wrestlers get beat Friday night because of having to wait all day to wrestle in my opinion that is. The wrestler that won earlier in the day already got their nerves out and are more relaxed.

It is an advantage as you get to scout and see the other wrestlers in your bracket as you may not have seen some or most of them all year, and it is 1 less match you have to worry about.

I guess I just don't like the time schedule for that is all. I know it's always an advantage of getting a free win but with the schedule it is really hard sometimes for the Sectional winners. Plus guys that wrestle twice on Friday have an easier time making weight on Saturday morning.

I think someones opinion is probablybased on how they do in their first match. If they lose they will look for some excuse, sitting around all day. If they win they will take credit for the scouting time or extra rest.

Best case scenario let all four from sectional advance, and it's not even a topic.

I would like to have a bye and the reason being to scout competition and closer to finals. Many kids do not get the oppportunity to see some kids from other sectionals. Having a bye allows them to see who they are wrestling and maybe gets some tips on their style ect. Also its one spot closer to being a champ, and I feel if you are the best kid in your sectionals there needs to be some reward there for when they hit the state tournamnet.

Beginning to come around to agreeing with advancing 4, but Doughboy has a good point: If all four are going to advance (and wrestle) anyway, what's the point in winning first at Sectional? You will be starting at the same point as a 4th placer, unless I am missing something.

AAA doesn't have it, and as soon as the rest don't, it won't even be a topic anymore. The reason for winning sectionals is, it's a match and you try to win them all, but in the long run it doesn't mean much, because no state crowns are placed the week before state. I can think of many champioship sectional/state matches that have flipped over the years.

the advantage to winning sectionals would be that now you get to face some one that got fourth at there sectionals.

How to Fix It

I think to fix it we send the top 4 down in A and AA....This would also aleve the walkover problem in the 3rd place match. Split the schools into equal 3rds, 16 guys in each weight and place 6............

some thought

Wrestling a kid who took 4th at sectionals seems like a pretty good reward. And also seems to give the 4th place finisher a better chance at getting the oppurtunity to get a chance in the wrestle backs (follow the leader)

Then would you have kids who throw the 3rd place match to wrestle someone who more likely go on being as they were a one seed so they would re enter the the bracket?
