FILA Announcement

This announcement by FILA (the governing body of wrestling internationally) is one of the potentially most significant decisions made in a long time that may have very significant and positive ramifications for the future of American folkstyle wrestling! Although it may just be a glimmer in the eye of US wrestling fans, this decision potentially paves the way for American folkstyle wrestling to become a style wrestled in international competition, and could even become an Olympic sport some day. My hat is off to USA Wrestling for championing the interest of American folkstyle wrestling on the international level. With the NCAA Div. 1 tournament poised to start tomorrow and the Olympic Trials around the corner, this is a very exciting development!

What this may mean in the short term is that folkstyle wrestling advocates and competitors may have opportunities overseas to compete, coach and promote the sport (or at least our version of the sport).

This is tremendous news.

It would be very interesting to see some of the World's best competing against our best in folkstyle.

We would obviously have a HUGE advantage in the mat wrestling.

This paragraph makes me think that this really isn't a very big deal.

"American Folkstyle is now recognized by FILA as a traditional wrestling style. It joins a number of other traditional wrestling styles practiced in other nations or regions with official FILA designation, including Celtic Wrestling, Belts Alysh, Kazakh Kuresi, Tartar Belt Wrestling Koresh, Yakut People Sakhaada Sport and Khanty-Mansi Wrestling."

I was excited when I thought folkstyle was potentially going to be a "3rd international style". Adding it to a list with 5 or 6 styles that I've never heard of just doesn't seem important to me. I don't know, maybe I need to read it again.

That's why I said it was a glimmer in the eye - a long way from reality, but a positive nevertheless
