Menacher won't be wrestling 170 because the Sages head coach let challenge matches go on this week before regionals. He will be wrestling 182 because the 160lber is ducking that bracket.

160 lber is Sr. and his last chance, Menacher is only a soph., aparrently the 160 lber was the best wrestler too?

Stalling does not the best wrestler make. I want opinions on challenge matches the week of regionals. NOT who you think deserves a last chance. Challenge matches were supposed to end the week of conference and the SR knew he couldn't win at 160 so he went to his daddy(one of the coaches) and got what he wanted.

Does either wrestler have a chance to qualify for State?

Up to the coach
I think the important thing to remember is that the head coach (who is doing a great job by the way) is the only opinion that matters. A coach can change his policy at any time based on a lot of details that the wrestlers, parents, and other coaches may not even know about. Believe it or not, coaches are not in this business to be unfair to kids!

Ha doing such a great job that the entire team thinks what was done is complete and utter bull? And Herrin, yes the sophomore did have a great chance to qualify at 170.

This is why our sport can do wrestle-offs, and as a coach, I am kinda glad that our sport can do these because it can help the decision process of our lineups ALL YEAR ROUND. I get nervous every time we do wrestle-off because of injuries or obvious inferior wrestlers could get a win, but it is also go for the wrestlers because they are putting their spot on the line and they have to work for their spot. They help put your kids in situations to experience adversity, especially if the competition is stiff.
Now saying that, it is hard to have wrestle-offs the week of regionals to set your lineups, but I did them this year and I do them every year. It makes me nervous because the best possible lineup you can make could be blown in one wrestle-off, but it happens. In this case, it didn't matter for the Sophomore because Monticello win regionals and he gets to wrestle again in Team Sectionals. You also can't predict if this Sophomore kid could make the state tourney because Brian Bahrs didn't make it out of Sectionals last (his sophomore year), and he won state the year prior and this year. It's hard to say he would. Plus, it was the senior's last year, and he probably wanted to go to state. Is that the best situation for the team, probably not, but as a coach you can make this decision and be wrong either way you pick. The SR is ticked cause he has to wrestle in a tough weight class and might not make state, or the SO is ticked cause he got booted for the state series. Tough choice, but whichever one is the coach's choice, it is the final say because the responsibility falls on him, so why not give the Sophomore a chance to earn his strips in a wrestle-off. At least you are giving him a chance. Tough choice, but that's what makes coaching a challenge. |
