Trevians on top of CSL

By SETH SCHWARTZ

New Trier coach Marc Tadelman challenged his squad to put in extra hours in the offseason. They responded and the results are positive as the Trevians won the Central Suburban League conference tournament 259.5 - 247.5 over Deerfield Saturday at Maine East.

“We challenged our guys at the beginning of the year,” said Tadelman. “We wanted to get eight champs and we got six. We set our goals high. Deerfield is ranked No. 13 and we’re 25th. Any time you can beat a team ranked that high is good. We got points from a lot of people and that’s what you want. We have the conference crossover next week and then the regional. We’re wrestling well and that’s our next goal - to win the regional.”

Colin Kenyon (106), M.J. Prichard (113), Chris Alcock (120), Arash Gahafuri (125), Jack Conner (152) and Paul Papoutsis (160) added valuable first place points.

Kenyon’s 10-0 major over Deerfield’s Jordan Lieberman and Prichard’s 4-2 decision against the Warriors Keven Hoogheem gave the Trevians an emotional lift.

“Seeing our younger guys start out like that got me pumped up,” said Conner, who had a 10-3 decision over Maine West’s Jordan Pessah. “I just wanted to stay offensive, get on top and ride tough. I put in 70 matches in the offseason. It’s been a big help.”

Deerfield was led by J.J. Nawrot (285), Artie Bess (220) and Lenny Bloom (145).

“We just didn’t wrestle with the type of urgency we needed,” said coach Marc Pechter.

Bloom held off Maine West’s Rico Zayas 6-2. After getting thrown last week, he proceeded with caution. After two nice takedowns, Zayas reversed Bloom, but the Deerfield senior got another takedown at the end of the third for the final score.

“I wanted to be careful,” said Bloom. “He was trying to work the underhook so I wanted to pick my shots at the right time.”

Maine South’s Dan Brewster (138) got a takedown at the end of the third period for a 4-2 decision over Maine West’s Jake Korbecki.

“I knew it was getting close, he kept backing up and I couldn’t get my 2-on-1 in,” said Brewster.
