Throwback Thursday: Bybee Vs Gerdes

Watch as senior Mark Bybee of St. Laurence faces senior Ben Gerdes of Sandburg for the 1994 Class AA 145-pound state title.

This was the fourth meeting between Bybee and Gerdes with Gerdes winning the first two matches and Bybee pinning Gerdes at the sectional tournament. Both Bybee (3x) and Gerdes (4x) were multiple time state place winners.

Stay tuned for a bonus throwback match to be released sometime on Thursday.

Thanks!

It was great seeing that match again, seemed like it happened yesterday.

1 point for locked hands...? But it was a potential pinning combination, it was a like a bad cradle attempt - what is the rule on this? Why was it called, I thought you can lock hands in a pinning attempt combination...

Tremendous match. Great to see Tom Gauger in Bybee's corner.

Don't you need to meet nearfall criteria (get swipes first) to safely lock hands around the body? There's not too many pinning combo's where that applies to anyway, maybe tight waist tilts or a few other related tilts?

Either way, great match here. Bybee had four losses listed and avenged every one late in the season... Gerdes is always in the "best to never win state" conversation, freestyle Cadet / Junior national champ and always came up just short in Assembly Hall.

These throwback matches are already one of the greatest things about this site. Keep 'em coming!!

I had a personal intrest in the 140 match before this one. Missed this one live. Thanks to "Throwback Thursdays", I felt 17 years old for 14 minutes.

Thanks Admin.

Two things I found intresting; how dominate Bybee was on top the 2nd period and how a bottom wrestler can simply raise his hand for injury timeout (while in trouble) and the ref grants it in the state finals. Not cool.

A great finals match. But it may have been the beginning of wrestlers losing taking their injury time outs to their advantage. What was the injury that stopped the match by him raising his hand ?

Looked like a lung injury very common at the time. Rule changes have helped get rid of that. Now if you have that injury you lose, or fix your injury in practice. Have not eliminated but helped

Rule 7-3-3 says nothing about a pinning combination, but rather about having met near fall criteria. You may lock hands around the legs or the body from the offensive position once near fall criteria has been met, not before. Otherwise, it is a technical violation.

Personally, I think it was a great call... one that many less experienced officials would miss.

The ref calling stalemate in OT when Gerdes was clearly shedding the figure 4 on the head was the deal breaker. Looked to me like the wrestling should have continued and Gerdes would have gotten the two and won the match. The bout remided me of Brill's loss in the finals this year. Both Gerdes and Brill carried the action on their feet and didn't reap the benefits.
