Throwback Thursday: Benion Vs Siebert
 

Watch as undefeated senior Ernest Benion of Romeoville takes on junior Eric Siebert of LaSalle-Peru for the 1992 Class AA 140 pound state title.

Both Benion and Siebert went on to wrestle for the University of Illinois where Benion became a 3x NCAA All-American (1st, 2nd, 3rd) and Siebert a 2x NCAA All-American (1st, 5th).

Siebert is currently the head coach of the Class 3A State Champion Sandburg Eagles.

Look at Siebert ROCKIN' that flat-top! I could never get mine to stand straight up like that! LOL

The whole thing turned when Siebert tied his shoe. Momentum shift.

That's some HARD wrestling, both brought it from start to finish. Pace of that match was phenomenal.

Have there been any other future NCAA DI champs to meet in the finals, or any round at IHSAs? These guys both showed guts in this match that carried them through their NCAA runs.

WOW! Best match thus far on throwback thursday imo. Pity the tough kids at some of these weight classes back in the day. Siebert and Benion at your weight? Man, thats rough.

Did Benion have a brother? I thought I remember another Benion from Romeoville who coaches at Leyden now.

He does have a brother. I don't know if he is coaching, but he had some real close matches with Zajac his senior year. I don't remember his name, but I think he placed in 1994 or 1995 @189lbs.

His name may have been Byron? I don't recall.

I just looked at IHSA.org and his brother did not place. I would have sworn that he had, but I am getting old and a little slow!! ;)
