I had not seen this match. It certainly has been discussed often over the years. I am struck by how much more of complete wrestlers these guys were in 1995 than many of the wrestlers I have seen in the last ten years. No take 'em down let 'em style here. Both wrestlers were obviously good on their feet, but they knew how to ride, especially Reggie Wright. Tony Davis may be the most decorated kids wrestler in Illinois ever, but Wright was the better wrestler at this point in their careers. I loved the Greco shout out for Wright, though Tony Davis obviously had good hips without the Greco accolades. Speaking of Greco....
Curby Cup this weekend! See you there www.curbycup.com |
Is that Fulscher reffing? Also, who was on the mic for play by play? I got Rob doing color, but can't place the voice of the man calling the shots....

Gonna have to disagree here. Had TD been in any kind of shape whatsoever, he would've won by a comfortable margin imo. |

By the way, I don't think that TD was not in shape at that point of the season. Offseason, maybe. Early in the season, maybe. But by the time the state finals came up, he had to be in as good of shape as it gets for him. I agree he was gassed ending the 2nd period, but that was a result of some great action/scrambles in the 1st period and some tough riding by Wright while TD was actively trying to escape in the 2nd. Both guys were going hard and letting it all hang out, so by the 4 minute mark of the match its not surprising that one or both would be gassed. Wright's superior conditioning helped him overcome some bad shots and win that match in the end. When you look at the match and assess who was better at the time: They were evenly matched on their feet early on with some great scrambles. Wright rode Davis tougher than Davis rode him. Wright scored more points from the bottom without the assistance of the ref. Wright seemed to have better conditioning. Wright was the aggressor in the 3rd period even when he was winning and taking bad shots. Wright scored the winning takedown in OT to win. They actually wrestled each other and Wright won the match. With all of that, how can you disagree with Wright being the better wrestler at that point in their careers:confused: |

Tony Davis is a good friend of mine and a phenomenal person, both on and off of the mat. Due to the circumstances, Tony was probably not 100 percent in that match. God lets things happen for a reason. That match made my career. Tony was already the man, and went on to win an NCAA Title and become a successful adult. Shot out to Tony, TJ, TC, Joe, Dave, Darnell and the Twister family! Reggie Wright

Thanks!
I really enjoy these throwback matches, it brings back good memories.
Watching this match 15 years later was just as good as seeing it Live, seems like all eyes were on that match. I remember TD running out of gas early, but he just dominated opponents all year. Congrats again to Reggie. |
