Throwback Thursday: Wright Vs Davis
Considered by many as one of the greatest matches in IHSA history, Tony Davis of Chicago Mt. Carmel and Reggie Wright of Proviso East squared off for the 1995 135-pound state title. Both were juniors and undefeated at the time.
Our very own Rob Sherrill provides the color commentary. Click here to read more about this classic match in the Chicago Tribune. |
Epic showdown & result. Thanks a ton for uploading!! Been waiting years to see this match (again)!!

Interesting
Davis was out of gas and Wright took two horrible shots to give up points. Wright was clearly the better wrestler in this match. It was kinda funny to see all the officials in the back ground that had full heads of hair and it wasn't grey:)

Keep them coming. I can't wait until thursdays now. In Fact, can we do Throwback Mondays, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. Thanks!

WOW
Didn't make the trip down my Freshmen year, now I'm regretting not being there live. WOW that was the first time I have ever seen that match and it did not disappoint. Love this throwback Series your doing it is getting all of us junkies our fix over summer time :)
On a side note that call for Davis getting the one would of never been called in present day time, in fact I think it was a horrible call for 95. If Matmen had been around and Davis would of pulled off that match could you imagine the threads started about that official! |
Could someone post both wrestlers wrestling career from high school thru college? Wow that was a great match.

Davis, who did not wrestle his senior year of hs at Morgan Park (yes, he left Mt. Carmel) was, I think, a national juco champ and followed up with two AA years at Northern Iowa. Lost in '99 to fellow hs teamate T.J. Williams and would beat Illini great Adam Tirapelli in overtime the next year for 1st place. Wright would AA twice at Oklahoma State (4th place both times) but would not place as the no.1 seed his senior year at nationals. Lost to Mike Zadick (Iowa) in the quarters and after winning two wrestlebacks (Jantzen-Harvard, Bentley-No.Carolina) was pinned by Lock Haven's Jamaar Billman in the AA round. An incredibly quick pin by the way, that Wright conceded was the work of the infamous Pennsylvania "cement mixer"! It should be mentioned that Tirapelli was champ in 2001 and that Wright again beat Davis in a dual meet in Stillwater that was considered another overtime classic.

Wow!!!!!! Wow!!!!! Wow!!!!!

Great match. Both wrestlers letting it fly. Both guys made mistakes by taking chances and both found ways to wrestle through them.
I have a throwback request for next week. 1996 NCAA 158 lb final-Joe Williams (Iowa) vs Ernest Benion (Illinois). This match was a back and forth barn burner. I have not been able to find this on You Tube. |
Best State Finals Match Ever
Not only was this a great match, but the high school and collegiate accolades of Davis and Wright were unreal. I think we would be hard pressed to find two more decorated wrestlers that competed against each other in the IHSA State Finals, at least in the last 30 years. There have been some epic battles since, Prater/Lloyd and Benefiel/Blanton come to mind, but the resumes of those wrestlers were not the same as Reggie and Davis. I'm not sure that Davis had been beaten in High School and I know he won 5 IKWF State Titles back when it was all one division.
Anyhow, great match, great feature to the site. |
